Son’s Salute

A six-year-old kid in miniature military camouflage stood straight and gave a sharp salute as his father’s body was brought home to Mullanpur, Mohali district, Punjab, in a moving demonstration of undying bravery and tenacity. In a bloody confrontation with terrorists in Anantnag, Kashmir, Colonel Manpreet Singh, the commanding officer of the 19 Rashtriya Rifles (19 RR) and a recipient of the renowned Sena Medal (Gallantry), was one of three heroes who perished.

His two-year-old sister, who was too little to understand the seriousness of the situation, copied the salute next to him, standing together as a symbol of innocence amidst the sea of grief. Locals and a growing audience gathered to pay their final respects to the soldier who had died, holding up the kids as examples of bravery and selflessness.

The distraught faces of Colonel Manpreet Singh’s mother, sister, and wife could be seen in the images broadcast from the gloomy scene. There was a vacuum left by the passing of a beloved husband, brother, and son that felt insurmountable to fill.

After the army and police launched a coordinated operation in response to specific intelligence regarding terrorist operations, the tragic tragedy took place. Three brave men—Colonel Manpreet Singh, a major, and a deputy superintendent of the Jammu and Kashmir Police—were tragically killed during a fatal altercation that broke out in the higher regions of the Kokorenag district of the valley.

Major Ashish Dhonchak’s remains was also sent to his home village in Panipat. He had bravely led a search mission alongside Colonel Singh while under severe enemy fire. To say goodbye to the valiant major, thousands of mourners gathered alongside family members and other officers. As soon as his body arrived at his Panipat house, where a wreath-laying ceremony and a gun salute were staged in his honor, his ultimate journey began.

Major Dhonchak’s remains were then driven by an Army truck to his home hamlet of Binjhol, where final rituals were carried out. Friends, family, and well-wishers gathered to say goodbye in tears as the eight-kilometer long, somber procession traveled to its destination in just under three hours.

The funeral for 33-year-old Himayun Muzamil Bhat, a deputy superintendent with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, was place at Budgam in another region of Kashmir. Police Chief Dilbag Singh and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha were among the dignitaries who attended the ceremony and paid their tributes to the deceased police officer.

The tragic sights from these funerals serve as a powerful reminder of the enormous sacrifices made by these brave people in the line of duty. Their dedication to protecting the country from terrorism and violence serves as a moving reminder of the courage and selflessness displayed by our armed services and police officers every day.

When we think back on these tragic incidents, we are brought to mind the severe toll that fighting terrorism may have on our heroes’ and their families’ lives. It is a somber example of the bravery and commitment needed to defend our country even in the face of serious peril.

The picture of Colonel Manpreet Singh’s little son and daughter saluting stands as a beacon of hope in the midst of terrible grief and represents the unyielding spirit of the families of our armed services. Their naive remembrance of their father’s sacrifice serves as a testament to the tenacity and fortitude that characterize the families who assist our gallant service members and servicewomen.

In this time of sorrow, our country is united in paying tribute to these slain heroes and comforting their bereaved families. Their sacrifices will live on in our hearts for all time as a constant reminder of the tremendous debt we owe to those who defend us at great personal cost.

May Deputy Superintendent Himayun Muzamil Bhat, Major Ashish Dhonchak, and Colonel Manpreet Singh rest in peace understanding that their bravery and selflessness will never be forgotten.
